Tradition and Hospitality Since 1903

The lineage of the Hotel Alpenblick traces back to one of the oldest families in Zermatt. Adelrich Julen, a mountaineer and grandfather of the current hotelier family, Pannatier, bought the property and the building in 1928 together with his wife, Anna Julen-Herder.
The guesthouse was named Pension Des Alpes from its establishment until it was sold to the young family. Heidy Julen, the daughter of Adelrich Julen and Anna Julen-Herder, took over the hotel in 1950 after the death of her parents.
In 1952, Heidy married the customs officer Daniel Pannatier. Pierre-André, the second-born son, who was born in 1956, followed in his parents' footsteps early on. When his father and grandfather, Daniel Pannatier, passed away in 1990, he took over the Hotel Alpenblick with his wife Ingrid Antonia Pannatier-Schaller and Heidy Pannatier-Julen, marking the third generation of ownership.

WALTER BONATTI

Walter Bonatti (1930–2011) was an Italian alpinist, considered one of the greatest mountaineers of his time. His numerous first ascents and new routes, including the solo winter ascent of the Matterhorn’s north face in 1965, made him internationally known.

During his stays in Zermatt, Bonatti found refuge at the Hotel Alpenblick. The hotel, which has been in operation since 1903 and is managed by the Pannatier family, served as a place of rest and retreat for Bonatti.

The close relationship between Bonatti and the Pannatier family was marked by mutual respect and friendship. The Hotel Alpenblick was not just a place for Bonatti to stay but a home away from home, where he was always welcome and found support.

The Matterhorn Museum Zermatlantis dedicated a special exhibition to Bonatti, which includes alpine equipment and information boards with historical data and notable quotes. This exhibition is a sign of appreciation for Bonatti’s achievements and his special connection to Zermatt.
